2026 DATA REPORT

Does responding faster with AI actually make you more money, or is that just a sales pitch?

The honest answer, using real 2026 numbers for home service businesses and small law firms. Sources linked below every stat.

If you run a home services business

The short version: unanswered calls are not a minor leak. They are a direct, measurable revenue loss, and the data on how much is now well documented.

Small businesses answer only 37.8% of incoming calls. The rest go to voicemail or get no response at all, and 85% of callers who reach voicemail never call back.
Missed calls cost the average small business roughly $126,000 a year in lost revenue. For HVAC contractors specifically, a single missed call is estimated at $1,200 to $3,500.
Contacting a new web lead within 5 minutes makes you 100 times more likely to reach them, and 21 times more likely to qualify them, than waiting 30 minutes.

What this actually means: the ROI case for AI here is not "AI is smart," it is "someone, or something, has to pick up the phone in under 5 minutes, every time, including nights and weekends." That is a coverage problem before it is an intelligence problem.

If you run a small law firm

Adoption is already high. The gap is not "should we use AI," it is "are we using it on the part of the business that actually moves revenue."

In Clio's 2026 survey, 71% of solo practitioners and 75% of small firms report using AI. But depth of use is uneven: 93% of mid-sized firms use it extensively, versus only 10% of small firms.
Firms using client intake technology see 51% more leads and 52% higher revenue on average. Firms respond to only 33% of prospective-client emails, even though consumers expect an answer in minutes.
Despite high adoption, only about a third of solo and small firms (32% and 31%) report AI has actually increased revenue so far. Most of the rest say it is too early to tell.

What this actually means: most small firms have added an AI tool somewhere (drafting, research), but not to intake, which is where the survey data shows the actual revenue lift. That is the specific gap worth closing first.
